Leif Kaner-Lidström

Leif Kaner-Lidström, in all his iterations, has become known for an exploratory creativity which pushes the boundaries of musical genres. This might suggest that his motivations are as varied as his output – but when asked, he will always return to one core inspiration: his love of the piano.

By appreciating the sensitivity and diverse capability of the piano, Kaner-Lidström proves that its musical possibilities are endless. His deep respect for the instrument, coupled with what the Australian Stage calls his “quite extraordinary ear… you get the unusual sensation that Kaner-Lidström plays not just the piano, but the building itself.”

Music, like all great art, should inspire – but more than that, it should come from inspiration. Kaner-Lidström hopes that through his music he can communicate this passion; for people to hear the joy that the piano brings him every day as well as taking their own joy and meaning from it.

He is also a permanent member of the Jess Gillam Ensemble, currently on the summer tour across the UK and Germany to critical acclaim. “The artist and her ensemble not only convince with the excellent interpretation of well-known works, but also with their intelligent wealth of ideas and expressive intensity, making classical music more interesting and attractive for the younger generations”

Kaner-Lidström’s latest project, Le Cygne, is an album written in collaboration with his cellist father Mats Lidström and inspired by the seminal composition of Camille Saint-Saëns. It comprises 24 ‘Swans’ including an original composition which was named Radio 3’s Highlight of the Week in May 2022. The full album will be released in September 2023.

Other composition highlights include a piano trio Highland Song which was picked up by Radio 3 and continues to be played on national radio, and The Lady of Shalott, written for and performed by Proms debutant Abel Selaocoe

Kaner-Lidström features on multiple tracks on Jess Gillam’s 2020 album TIME, which reached Number 1 on the Classical Charts. In his various chamber music capacities, he has performed on Radio 3 In Tune and guested on the award-winning This Classical Life. His Spotify credits also include ‘My Mind is Still’ from the latest Voces8 album Infinity.
